Lightning photographed by superfast X-ray camera, Nikola Tesla nods with approval

You know, we could just leave you with the image above and be done here, but its backstory is almost as cool. Researchers at the Florida Institute of Technology have built a 1,500-pound X-ray camera that can shoot ten million frames a second and then pointed it at a nearby flash of lightning to try and learn more about it. How did they know where the lightning would strike? Well, in true scientific fashion, they caused it themselves! This was done by shooting rockets into thunderstorms, with attached wires directing the flow of energy down into their target zone. The imagery produced from the X-ray sensor is actually extremely low-res -- a 30-pixel hexagonal grid is all you get -- but it's enough to show that X-ray radiation is concentrated at the tip of the lightning bolt. What good that knowledge will do for the world, we don't know, but we're sure it'll provide nice fodder for the

Japanese paper pegs PlayStation Phone for spring launch

In case you needed any more evidence that Sony is ramping up to launch a gaming system on a phone in the next few months, here you go: Japanese ragAsahi Shimbun says that the PlayStation Phone -- which could be known as the Zeus Z1, Xperia Play, or something else altogether by the time it's on store shelves -- is expected in the spring of 2011 for a North American and European release. That lines up with virtually everything we've been hearing lately, and it's also fortuitous timing considering that both CES and MWC are right around the corner; we don't know what Sony Ericsson might have on tap for CES, but we definitely know they'replanning some new Xperia-branded models for MWC. There are many questions left unanswered -- how (and if) any of this

Periodic table blasted onto a single human hair using ions, human reportedly wants his hair back

We've seen the Torah inscribed on a surface the size of a pin, and the atomic pen making inroads into even more impressive feats, but tiny writing never ceases to amaze us. Now, it seems, the entire periodic table of the elements has been scribed onto a single hair -- that of Martyn Poliakoff, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. The project involved magnifying the hair under an electron microscope, and 'writing' on it with ions using an ion beam writer to imprint the entire table of elements onto the hair. As you'll see in the video after the break, the

South Korea rolls out first commercial electric bus service, we are green with envy

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has just rolled out a world first by instating commercial, all electric bus service in the city. We've previously seen pilot programs and trials, but actual working commercial service has never been previously implemented. The program, developed in agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hankuk Fiber, and the buses themselves can run up to about 52 miles on a single charge (which takes about 30 minutes), and

Porsche promises to unveil 'new model' in Detroit, could it be the 918 Spyder plug-in?

Porsche promises to unveil 'new model' in Detroit, could it be the 918 Spyder plug-in?
Maybe this is wishful thinking and maybe we're optimists, but maybe, just maybe, Porsche could be ready to unveil to the world the final version of its supremely hot hybrid. We already know the company has given the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid a green light for a run down assembly lines, a legitimate supercar with a 700+ horsepower on tap despite achieving near 80mpg. But, we don't know the when nor the all-important how much. With Porsche promising to give "a new model its

Ashmit and I are just friends: Veena

Veena Malik's intimacy with Ashmit Patel in the Bigg Boss house set the TRPs soaring, but it wasn't enough for her as the controversial Pakistani beauty says she wanted to be more naughty on the reality show, but decided otherwise.

"Ash-mit is a sweetheart. He's my buddy. If there was anything more between us, I'm bold enough to admit it. But there's nothing beyond friendship between us," Veena, who is single and is waiting for her prince charming, said in an interview.

"Trust me, I wanted to do a lot of mischievous things on 'Bigg Boss'. But I restrained myself. I never thought of a Bollywood career. It will be a matter of great pride for me if anyone will think I fit in among the Indian beauties. Pamela Anderson told me I'm a warrior. So I'd like to

High Court orders attachment of Sanjay Dutt's properties

The Bombay High Court ordered the attachment of two properties of Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt over a financial row with producer Shakeel Noorani, lawyers said.

The decision followed an arbitration award passed by the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPPA) in January this year in favour of Noorani.

Noorani's lawyer Ashok Saraogi said his client had in 2002 paid Sanjay Dutt a signing amount of Rs.50 lakh for his film Jaan Ki Baazi. But Dutt failed to complete the shooting, Saraogi told IANS.

"It was only in 2008 that Dutt finally told Noorani that he will not be completing the film, causing financial losses to

Veena Malik gone: Will Ashmit be cornered?

Veena Malik gone: Will Ashmit be cornered? After telly star Sara Khan, Bollywood actor Ashmit Patel has had to bid farewell to another 'good friend' Veena Malik, who was evicted from celebrity reality show Bigg Boss on Friday night.

The Pakistani starlet was the last of the housemates to maintain a pro-Ashmit stand. She used to pamper him like a baby; feeding him his morning dose of papaya, making and serving chai (tea), cooking his favourite dishes, washing his clothes, massaging him and even providing the daily dose of kisses and bear hugs.

In fact, Veena was the only person Ashmit could count on, while other housemates disliked his frank and straight-forward ways.

Moreover, it was the couple's obvious fondness for each other that added spice, not only to their lives, but also to the viewer's interest.

For latecomers, Veena's affection for Ashmit surfaced during their task this Diwali, where night cameras caught her fondling and caressing him, as he fell asleep. Despite their arguments, the couple had immense understanding for

Ready: The impact of Salman & Vidya's wedding hype

Ready: The impact of Salman & Vidya`s wedding hypeDirector Anees Bazmee's movie Ready is surely ruffling a lot of feathers much before its release.

After having shot quite a lot of the movie in Sri Lanka and getting noticed due to the fact that it had coincided with a popular Awards function in the island country, and as it has two great actors in the lead with hunk Salman Khan and Asin, there are recent feathers ruffled for a wedding sequence for the movie in Mumbai.

Tabloids went berserk reporting about the Salman Khan and Asin wedding as pictures of both stars getting married in the traditional Punjabi style were leaked on the net.

There were a flood of messages and calls that both the stars started getting as a result of such reports, but as it was declared that it was only a part of the film are shooting for a sequence that things cooled down.

Now, the movie has suddenly gathered a lot of attention due to this wedding sequence and

Deepika and Siddharth Mallya off to UK for New YearDoes this mean the couple will bring in 2011 together?

Deepika Padukone and Siddharth Mallya were spotted at Mumbai's international airport on Sunday afternoon. The couple was headed for London.

It looks like the twosome preferred to soak in the Christmas festivities here and then head for England for the New Year celebrations.

Though the actress stuck to a casual jeans look as travel wear except for her furry boots, Mallya Jr was in a leather jacket and muffler. London is freezing and Dippy certainly needs a lot of warmth!

A Dubai b'day for Salman but Katrina wishes in advance

A Dubai b`day for Salman but Katrina wishes in advanceSalman Khan takes off with family and friends to celebrate his birthday in the UAE

This year Goa is passe and Dubai is the new favourite celeb destination. A number of B-Town folk are in the desert emirate to celebrate Salman Khan's 45th birthday today.

Every year, the actor brings in his big day at their Panvel farmhouse but this year, the 'Khan'daan and 40 friends flew to Dubai for the merrymaking.

Says a source, "Salman didn't want to bring in his birthday at the farmhouse this time. Though it rocks for the guests, his family members end up playing hosts and don't enjoy themselves.

So he decided to have them party without the headache of taking care of everyone.

Dubai is almost like Salman's second home and it was an obvious decision. Initially he wanted to take all his pals and family on a friend's aircraft but it wasn't available so

When Priyanka met Kareena: Let's forget and be friends

When Priyanka met Kareena: Let`s forget and be friendsA French manicured birdie who was present backstage at Umang 2010 -- the annual Police Mela -- called to say that Priyanka Chopra may be telling the world that she and Kareena Kapoor have buried the hatchet. But it's far from true.

The birdie was flapping her wings backstage when she saw PC go up to Bebo and say 'Let's forget what has happened and begin anew'.

And Bebo just gave her the famous Poo (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum) 'Whatever!' look and continued with what she was doing. Doesn't look like the Kapoor girl is in the mood to forget.

Launda Badnaam: Angry Arbaaz trashes Manoj TiwariBy Subhash K Jha

In an entertainment industry notorious for robbing artistes of their rightful resources Arbaaz Khan's munificence comes as a pleasant surprise.

After reading the story in Mumbai Mirror (Munni badnaam controversy gets bigger, Dec. 20) Arbaaz touched base to say he is willing to compensate Razia Beghum's family, though Arbaaz also made it clear that he doesn't really owe anyone any compensation.

Says Arbaaz, “Every week we've someone or the other claiming to be the original composer-singers of Munni badnaam. I can understand the eagerness to make a claim over something as successful as this song. The truth of the matter is, the original version of Munni badnaam (Launda badnaam) is a paaramparik (traditional) song. It therefore belongs to no on, and everyone. ”

Arbaaz further explains, “When someone comes to me with a script I don't ask him where it came from

Shocked Roland catches Race rip-off, thanks to Bipasha

Shocked Roland catches Race rip-off, thanks to BipashaEnglish-French director Roland Joffe realised that his 1999 film Goodbye, Lover was ripped off by Abbas-Mustan for Race

Director Roland Joffe loves India and Indian films. One is not sure anymore if he loves Abbas-Mustan as much as loves the rest of the Indian movie industry. Eighteen years ago, he shot The City Of Joy with Om Puri and Shabana Azmi in Kolkata (then Calcutta).

Now he's shooting a Maratha period film, Singularity, with Bipasha Basu in Australia.

Bipasha and Roland hit it off instantly in Brisbane. While shooting, they got down to discussing each other's work. And that's when Bipasha unwittingly let the cat out of the bag.

Says a source, "Bipasha and Roland were discussing one another's work. Roland asked Bipasha to name her most well-known films.

Bipasha immediately named Jism, Raaz, Ajnabee, Dhoom 2, Shob Charita Kalponik (Bengali) Corporate, Lamhaa and Race. Roland got interested in Race and Bipasha narrated the
