“a crowd-pleaser filled with laughter, tears and an uplifting resolution, “West Is West is a big-hearted slice of populist entertainment.” (Screendaily, Toronto Film Festival)
“If there is any justice, they should roll out the red carpet for Om Puri and Ila Arun at the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Oscar nominations.” (Rediffmovies)
“A highly entertaining film. Om Puri’s George Khan is truly one of the great comic roles of recent British films.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
“West is West is a remarkably buoyant, big-hearted movie. It betters its predecessor East is East, thanks to its broader emotional range and indefatigably high spirits” (The Toronto Star)
From the Producer of the film:
I make films because I love people. Because I love people, I care for them greatly. Art and life are mirrors and each has a responsibility to the other. Together with my distinguished writer, Ayub Khan Din, and a brilliantly talented team of Artists and film-makers, we have been fortunate enough to make a wonderful, uplifting film that entertains and touches the heart with a universal story of ordinary people, set in Pakistan in 1976. I cannot divorce the labour of love of the past 4 years making this film, from the pain and helplessness I feel when I see and think about the plight of those ordinary people affected by the floods in Pakistan today. It is my impassioned conviction that WEST IS WEST, as a film which is full of heart and humanity about the people of the very region that is so badly affected, above religion and above politics, must also serve as an ambassador to open hearts and raise money for the Flood Appeal. Please help us in our objective, just by coming to the cinema on the 17th October. I promise you that you will laugh and cry and be enlightened, and have a truly thrilling evening in the process of doing good for a crucially important cause. OM PURI, ILA ARUN and I very much hope to see you at the cinema on the 17th October!

Official Movie Synopsis:
Manchester, Northern England, 1976. The now much-diminished, but still claustrophobic and dysfunctional, Khan family continues to struggle for survival. Sajid, the youngest Khan, is under heavy assault both from his father’s tyrannical insistence on Pakistani tradition, and from the fierce bullies in the schoolyard. His father decides to pack him off to Mrs. Khan No 1 and family in the Punjab, the wife and daughters he had abandoned 30 years earlier. The sequel to East is East, West is West is the coming of age story of both 15-year-old Sajid and of his father, 60-year-old George Khan.
